Millyjenn's Story I have always been a "humanities" girl, which meant what was expected of me was to read a lot and be easy with words. This discouraged me a lot in anything related to numbers, science, or technology, it seemed like something that just wasn't for me or that I would never be able to learn. I went to the university to study political science, and later as I started working in nonprofits I developed a love for data science and realized coding was an important part of it. I just thought that learning how to code not only would improve the way I do my own data analysis but also how nonprofits and the whole development field get a grip of automation and fast-answer through technology. I think coding should be a part of what people do in humanities, specially in the nonprofit and development field.

🙋‍♀️ Millyjenn's Motivation

I am a Venezuelan living in Colombia. The situation in my country pushed me here, and as I have moved forward in my career in the nonprofit sector, I have realized that there is a huge lack of technology in the field. I would love to be able to work in refugee community integration, as a big population of Venezuelans like me is refugees in Colombia, and I think learning how to code could give a different side of how technology can improve society. Specifically, I would love to participate in the SheCodes workshops because I have tried learning before and I have been in situations where male partners make me feel like less, and I believe an environment where there are only women can improve this situation. Plus, the methodology of workshops is great for me, as I am a very practical learner.

🤹‍♀️ Millyjenn's Hobbies

I love hanging out with friends (even if it's virtual!), traveling, watching movies, and reading.

🎯

SheCodes Foundation Mission

Women currently hold 25% of coding jobs and earn 30% less money than men. In most developing countries, more than 65% of women don't have bank accounts and cannot afford to invest in their education. Female refugees also don’t have many opportunities to invest in their education and improve their career horizon - they often work in unskilled, undervalued, and low-paid informal sectors.

SheCodes is here to help provide women in developing countries and women who are refugees with the opportunity to learn how to code for free. SheCodes offers a solid introduction to product development, product design and product management.
