Thao's Story I was working in the event management/hospitality industry before the pandemic happened. The industry isn’t glamorous, the pay doesn’t make you rich, but the job has a way of renovating itself for every project that we work on, forcing us to think strategically and come up with a solution for any quest given, which made me feel very satisfied then. Unfortunately, the magic was lost with the pandemic occupying the world and we lost a significant aspect of our job to it. I was mortified to see myself no longer having the chance to solve complicated problems, to learn new things when working on a project. I was eager to find something else to fill the emptiness, and lucky for me, coding comes quite naturally when we’re all locked up. Coding does not discriminate whether I’m old, young, male or female, there’s no restriction in terms of time or space. As long as I’m committed enough, I can learn and solve some problems I see fit. During the lockdown time, I did not let my time go to waste, I’ve tried to learn Python and wrote some basic level games for my friends (white-letters-on-black-screen kind of game, very minimal, but I had fun building them). It wasn’t anything huge, but I would love to learn more and solve better issues.

🙋‍♀️ Thao's Motivation

I learn coding by self-studying, and it means I could easily get lost since I do not know what I should learn first or second. The way I help myself to have a clear line of learning is to go through the curriculum of some highly-rated courses and then follow that line. I learned about SheCodes and joined the free class recently, and find the course to be very refreshing and to the point.

🤹‍♀️ Thao's Hobbies

I have different journals to collect different ideas. For example, I like journaling my funny daily anecdote in the form of a comic, so I jot down those ideas whenever they come up for late execution (i.e., drawing them and publishing them on social media). I have a different journal to note down all inspiring quotes that I found online, or in books I read, so that I can revisit those quotes later one. Recently, I also keep a journal for app ideas - app that could solve my problem - and hopefully other people’s problems, and try to see how one day I can bring these ideas to life.

SheCodes Foundation Mission

Women currently hold 25% of coding jobs and earn 30% less money than men. In most developing countries, more than 65% of women don't have bank accounts and cannot afford to invest in their education. Female refugees also don’t have many opportunities to invest in their education and improve their career horizon - they often work in unskilled, undervalued, and low-paid informal sectors.

SheCodes is here to help provide women in developing countries and women who are refugees with the opportunity to learn how to code for free. SheCodes offers a solid introduction to product development, product design and product management.
