Busisiwe's Story I have always been a person who wondered how things are made, like how websites and apps are built. And I’ve been down the Google rabbit hole a few times in search for all this information, I’ve read a few articles and seen a few videos of people (mostly men) using code to bring things to life and solve problems, then my interest for coding came about, I ended up want to learn more about the how-tos and whys of coding. Since then I’ve never looked back. And that’s how my interest for coding came about. Through asking a simple “how”?

🙋‍♀️ Busisiwe's Motivation

I live in a country where women are mostly lawyers, nurses and teachers, if you ask most people around me they’d tell you coding is a man’s job. I on the other hand think coding is for anyone interested, the ability to use code to solve problems for me is riveting. And learning from SheCodes, a place where women are allowed to be great is amazing, being around amazing women and being able to learn from and grow with them is honestly something I would have never imagined possible. Coding seems a bit daunting if I am being honest, but I believe that it is perhaps how the world shows it to be, and I think SheCodes works to showing people like me that as long as you put your mind to it, there is nothing that is too far from reach. Having this opportunity will also allow me to use a passion and be able to provide not only for my family but for my community at large. And it will also enable me to a light to young girls with hopes of learning to go into tech and coding. That it is something very real and possible.

🤹‍♀️ Busisiwe's Hobbies

Reading, if there is a book to read then I am your girl. I love hearing my voice change in my head as I try and depict the different characters I read about in a novel 😂. I also love to bake, and cook in general, but only when I have a large selection of meal/ dish possibilities. I love doing my hair as well, I am self taught when it comes to a lot of things so in my need to do my hair I ended up picking up a skill that has turned into a hobby.

SheCodes Foundation Mission

Women currently hold 25% of coding jobs and earn 30% less money than men. In most developing countries, more than 65% of women don't have bank accounts and cannot afford to invest in their education. Female refugees also don’t have many opportunities to invest in their education and improve their career horizon - they often work in unskilled, undervalued, and low-paid informal sectors.

SheCodes is here to help provide women in developing countries and women who are refugees with the opportunity to learn how to code for free. SheCodes offers a solid introduction to product development, product design and product management.
