Homa's Story The first time that I got interested in coding was when I was a high school student and I guess it was mostly the effect of media. I was really into science and technology but didn't know a lot about coding. I have to admit that one of the reasons for this interest in coding was that everyone said it wasn't for women and women are not good at it. So, naturally, I wanted to prove them wrong. In university I got my first lessons on coding. At first it was amazing, but then it got hard and also seemed irrelevant and I lost my interest. But about two years ago I found my interest again, remembered that I wanted to learn coding and how it felt in the beginning, but I couldn't go to any classes, so I decided to learn on my own but could never finish any free courses. Honestly, even now I'm afraid of not being able to learn.

🙋‍♀️ Homa's Motivation

To be honest, the thing that motivates me the most right now is that I desperately need to get a proper job. A job that has at least some security, pays a decent amount and is stimulating, challenging and rewarding. The first time that I wrote and ran a code was in university. I was a chemical engineering major, due to some health problems I had to leave university and couldn't finish my degree. But I still remember how it felt to run our codes and solve the problem, even though we just had one course on programming and they taught us how to code with a chalk and a board, no computers in class. It was thrilling when our code worked. When I heard about SheCodes and read the reviews I told myself: That's it, that's what you need. Because I also have tried learning on my own and have failed.

🤹‍♀️ Homa's Hobbies

Reading has always been a hobby of mine. Alongside that I also make puppets and paper mache sculptures. I illustrate a little and also do modern embroidery. I like to learn different languages and lately I have taken to gardening.

SheCodes Foundation Mission

Women currently hold 25% of coding jobs and earn 30% less money than men. In most developing countries, more than 65% of women don't have bank accounts and cannot afford to invest in their education. Female refugees also don’t have many opportunities to invest in their education and improve their career horizon - they often work in unskilled, undervalued, and low-paid informal sectors.

SheCodes is here to help provide women in developing countries and women who are refugees with the opportunity to learn how to code for free. SheCodes offers a solid introduction to product development, product design and product management.
