Lam Thu's Story When I was in secondary school, I first used a computer in a neighbor’s computer shop. Most of the time I would watch, and the son would let me use it when he finished. I was a very curious child and I would always stay in the back and observed what he was doing. I remember when we were a bit older, he introduced to me a program that he made himself to save the score of each match in the European Championship which was so famous at that time. His program then analyzed the number and showed who would go to the next round. It does not seem to be impressive now, but we were so excited and since then I know that I want to make my own program just like him and this is the field that brings me joy. I learned basic Python and Java with the free materials on the Internet and I am fascinated to improve my skills.

🙋‍♀️ Lam Thu's Motivation

After seeing SheCodes foundation mission, it reminded me about myself 6 years ago. I appreciate so much that SheCodes share the chance for women in developing countries to learn how to code and reach a job opportunity. I am a Vietnamese student who lives in the countryside. It has become a negative stereotype for many generations that Vietnamese female students should not enter university but starting a family and nurture children when we are only 18. Additionally, if we are lucky to study higher education, Computer Science is still a major that everybody considers that it is for men and women would not be successful in this field. I have been dreaming to be a Computer Science student growing up, but without family support, I had to give up my passion and I always regret that I was not brave enough to find the way to pursue what I truly wanted. Now SheCodes provided us with this golden chance, I am craving for applying for this position and start over.

🤹‍♀️ Lam Thu's Hobbies

I love music! Whenever I have free time, I would play the guitar, coming up with some random melody, and sing along to it. It helps me a lot to rewind or sometimes my mind just wanders around and pops up ideas. It surprises me that what a single musical instrument can do, and I hope I can write my own song, the melody with guitar and a lovely lyric.

SheCodes Foundation Mission

Women currently hold 25% of coding jobs and earn 30% less money than men. In most developing countries, more than 65% of women don't have bank accounts and cannot afford to invest in their education. Female refugees also don’t have many opportunities to invest in their education and improve their career horizon - they often work in unskilled, undervalued, and low-paid informal sectors.

SheCodes is here to help provide women in developing countries and women who are refugees with the opportunity to learn how to code for free. SheCodes offers a solid introduction to product development, product design and product management.
