Maryann's Story While in Secondary school, I actually had the intention of studying medicine but I soon found that my inquisitiveness and curiosity about technology superceded my desire to study medicine. It also helped that my older brother, who was a lead programmer at Andela at the time, encouraged me to pursue a career in computer technology. So Ieorking towards this, first by seeking answers from my teachers in School, and then by doing some personal research. The issue though, was that the more I read about computer technology and programming, the more confused I became and luckily, the more I wanted to know. One of the things I discovered from everything( both my research and lessons from my teacher) was that “everything in computers are programmed and computer programs understand instructions feed to them through a computer readable languages which have their own syntax and symbols." n the year 2017, I got admitted into Nnamdi Azikiwe University to study Computer Science. At this point, I had built up considerable interest in programming and I was looking forward to building up skills in Programming. I soon realized though that to be a great programmer I would need to invest and work on myself a whole lot, because in my first year, I wasn’t taught all that I was expecting to learn. So, I started attending seminars and researching on my own about programming.

🙋‍♀️ Maryann's Motivation

learning new concepts and also networking with experienced female developers. I have always been fascinated by technology and it’s application to problem solving. It has always marveled me to see how systems work and how innovative technology can be employed to create solutions and improve the human experience. Back in secondary school, we were taught about operating systems and how they interact with application software, by the lecturers, although basic, always got me asking myself questions like “how does computer programs interact?", “what makes up an operating system?", “how do computers function in general”.

🤹‍♀️ Maryann's Hobbies

Watching Movies, Travelling and listening to songs.

SheCodes Foundation Mission

Women currently hold 25% of coding jobs and earn 30% less money than men. In most developing countries, more than 65% of women don't have bank accounts and cannot afford to invest in their education. Female refugees also don’t have many opportunities to invest in their education and improve their career horizon - they often work in unskilled, undervalued, and low-paid informal sectors.

SheCodes is here to help provide women in developing countries and women who are refugees with the opportunity to learn how to code for free. SheCodes offers a solid introduction to product development, product design and product management.
