Sheripher's Story When i finished high school, i got a scholarship to study computer operations and fundamentals. While there, my class was a mixture of students including programming students. However, almost all the programming students were men. I asked one of the lectures why programming students were all men and told me that women are not capable of learning programming because it is difficult. This pained my heart considering that this was a norm even in the society which i was born and raised. Therefore since then i have always wanted to study Computer languages to rewrite the narratives.

🙋‍♀️ Sheripher's Motivation

I have grown up in a community that believes computers are for men not women. I have always wanted to study computer science to break this status quo and the social construction of gender as far as science careers are concerned. Since i did not have the chance to fulfill my dream, i believe SheCodes will give me an opportunity to realize my dream and be able to develop programs that will not only contribute to the development of my country Malawi, but the world at large. I would like to be part of the women that will narrow the gender gap in computer programming. As the world in changing to digitalized systems, i would like to equip myself and be able to understand the computer languages to advance in my career as an international citizen. I would like to be equipped and utilize one of the essential skills in the 21st century and be part of the world we want in the 4th generation world in finding sustainable solutions to the global issues.

Women currently hold 25% of coding jobs and earn 30% less money than men. In most developing countries, more than 65% of women don't have bank accounts and cannot afford to invest in their education. Female refugees also don’t have many opportunities to invest in their education and improve their career horizon - they often work in unskilled, undervalued, and low-paid informal sectors.

SheCodes is here to help provide women in developing countries and women who are refugees with the opportunity to learn how to code for free. SheCodes offers a solid introduction to product development, product design and product management.
