Anne 's Story While at the university, I made a lot of friends from the technology field. Most of them were either pursuing Computer Technology, ICT or Mathematics and Computer Science. Many a times I would find them writing codes and we also had discussions around programming and the future in regards to technology. It was from these discussions that I gained interest in learning programming skills and at some point, I felt like I had chosen a wrong course, Community Development and Development and instead, I should have pursued a course like computer technology. I became intentional about learning how to code and I started by inquiring from my friends what software I would need installed in my computer to code. I then went ahead to ask about platforms where I could learn how to code for free. My friends directed me to tutorialspoint and codecademy. Well, I started my sessions on tutorialspoint but I hard a huge problem linking information and decided to use codecademy. Codecademy was quite fun because I was learning through practical projects. However, I could not afford to sustain my data bundle purchase because I was still a student at the time with no source of income. I took a bit of a break and after a while I started coding again. This time around an IT friend shared with me a book that I found very useful because for the first time, I was now able to link information and actually understand how HTML for example relates to CSS and the main purpose for CSS. However I feel that with guided learning, I will have a smooth time learning and at least have a point of reference in case I get stuck.

🙋‍♀️ Anne 's Motivation

Technology fascinates me and I decided to start teaching myself how to code so that I could at least do a few things on my own for example, developing a website for a community based organization that I co-founded here in Kenya. I also believe so much in my problem solving skills and I felt that by learning how to code, I could be in a position to develop a novel climate change solution. I therefore started to teach myself HTML and CSS. However, this being quite a new field to me, I struggled with decoding information and actually linking the knowledge learnt in HTML to CSS. In addition to that, my pace has been quite slow since I have to do everything on my own. I have actually been using a soft copy book to teach myself since I do not have wifi and streaming videos via YouTube is quite expensive in terms of data bundles that one has to purchase. I am really motivated to continue learning how to code with SheCodes because it believes in my great potential as a lady in the technology field. Secondly, through the scholarship, I will be able to have a guided learning and I don't have to figure everything on my own. At least I can even get to ask questions when stuck. Thirdly, my pace of learning will increase and improve, given that there is a timeline for the program.

🤹‍♀️ Anne 's Hobbies

I like to sing and act. I have been performing theatre plays for about 3 years and even got a chance to get featured in a few local films. I am currently venturing into voice acting and I hope that I get into animation voice acting, I love watching animations and cartoons as well. As for singing, I sing all day everyday. I am still trying to get my vocals right and I rehearse a lot.

SheCodes Foundation Mission

Women currently hold 25% of coding jobs and earn 30% less money than men. In most developing countries, more than 65% of women don't have bank accounts and cannot afford to invest in their education. Female refugees also don’t have many opportunities to invest in their education and improve their career horizon - they often work in unskilled, undervalued, and low-paid informal sectors.

SheCodes is here to help provide women in developing countries and women who are refugees with the opportunity to learn how to code for free. SheCodes offers a solid introduction to product development, product design and product management.
