Amina's Story A December 2023 TikTok video about a bioinformatician's code-driven work on finding cures for motor neuron disease sparked my fascination with the potential of code. While the field itself is impressive, it was the revelation of coding's diverse applications that truly hooked me. Beyond the familiar software developer, game programmer, and web developer roles, I discovered a vast world of possibilities. This realization brought a sense of security in knowing I'll never lack employment opportunities, especially considering the high-unemployment country I reside in. Even more inspiring is knowing that I could one day use code to bring my ideas to life and help better other people's livelihoods.

🙋‍♀️ Amina's Motivation

At 21, I carry the weight of a family's loss. After my father's tragic passing 12 years ago, my mother became the sole provider for myself, 3 siblings, and extended family. Her unwavering dedication comes at a cost - her own emotional, mental, and physical wellbeing often neglected. Now, I seek to return the favor. Through this workshop and future employment, I aim to alleviate her burden and ensure she finally prioritizes her own needs, as well as never hasving to worry about these needs in future.

For fun I like to draw, I own an art journal and I use it as a means to express myself. I also like to videograph any activity I get up to alone, with friends or family and I turn the videos into one whole vlog which captures the experiences and tells a sort of story, ultimately preserving these memories.

Women currently hold 25% of coding jobs and earn 30% less money than men. In most developing countries, more than 65% of women don't have bank accounts and cannot afford to invest in their education. Female refugees also don’t have many opportunities to invest in their education and improve their career horizon - they often work in unskilled, undervalued, and low-paid informal sectors.

SheCodes is here to help provide women in developing countries and women who are refugees with the opportunity to learn how to code for free. SheCodes offers a solid introduction to product development, product design and product management.
