JOAN's Story The COVID-19 lockdown served as a catalyst for my foray into coding. Confined at home, I witnessed firsthand how code formed the backbone of so many essential services – from video calls with loved ones to online grocery deliveries. This pervasive presence sparked a critical question: how could I leverage this powerful tool to create a positive impact, especially within my own community? Healthcare emerged as a focal point. The pandemic highlighted existing disparities in access to medical care. It became clear that technology, driven by code, could play a crucial role in bridging these gaps. By learning to code, I can contribute to the development of innovative solutions – telemedicine platforms for remote consultations, for example – that can improve healthcare accessibility and quality within my community.

🙋‍♀️ JOAN's Motivation

Having witnessed firsthand the complexities and inefficiencies in healthcare delivery, I'm driven to bridge the gap between medicine and technology through coding. My passion for patient care compels me to develop innovative solutions. Learning to code empowers me to create user-friendly applications that streamline medical processes, not just for doctors and nurses, but for patients as well. With the world today slowly embracing digital health and telemedicine platform, my ambition to build a system that allows patients in remote areas to connect with specialists easily. This will be tailored to the different languages spoken by people in my community. In addition, I envision an AI-powered diagnostic tool that catches potential issues earlier, improving patient outcomes particularly for noncommunicable diseases which are on the rise. These are the kinds of healthcare advancements that excite me. By delving into coding, I can contribute to a future where healthcare is not only more efficient but also more accessible and personalized for everyone.

🤹‍♀️ JOAN's Hobbies

I venture out on challenging backpacking trips in remote areas and immersing myself in nature. In addition, I channel my artistic side through landscape photography, Pottery and Painting. I also enjoy Volley, Badminton and Chess which help me keep fit and engage in teamwork and socialize with others.

SheCodes Foundation Mission

Women currently hold 25% of coding jobs and earn 30% less money than men. In most developing countries, more than 65% of women don't have bank accounts and cannot afford to invest in their education. Female refugees also don’t have many opportunities to invest in their education and improve their career horizon - they often work in unskilled, undervalued, and low-paid informal sectors.

SheCodes is here to help provide women in developing countries and women who are refugees with the opportunity to learn how to code for free. SheCodes offers a solid introduction to product development, product design and product management.
