Lisa's Story My interest in coding has been influenced by two significant factors in my life: my education and my career path. Initially, I was introduced to coding through my academic studies, where I focused extensively on gender disparities in labor and economic development. As the workplace increasingly shifts towards digitalisation and new opportunities emerge, my curiosity about the tech industry and its potential to address these gaps, particularly for women, has grown. Coding, in particular, has captured my attention as a skill that could help bridge these divides. Regarding my career, I've recognised that my past choices have been more shaped by circumstances rather than by exploring various possibilities. As I transition into the workforce, I've become acutely aware of how these choices have limited my potential for building a secure future for myself and those around me. I see coding as pivotal in shaping a more promising future. I believe that acquiring coding skills will provide me with access to better opportunities. My ultimate career aspiration is to become an AI or Machine Learning Engineer. I am driven by the desire to not only address gender representation in data but also to contribute to the development of ethically sound AI systems. I am committed to making a positive impact in shaping a more inclusive and equitable future through my work in the field of AI and machine learning.

🙋‍♀️ Lisa's Motivation

My motivation to learn with SheCodes is fuelled firstly by an unwavering passion for breaking down barriers by empowering women in the tech world and secondly, my desire to be part of the movement of women empowering themselves with tech skills in a rapidly evolving technological landscape. With its verification recognised by a wide range of companies, SheCodes offers women a tangible gateway to make themselves more marketable and competitive, granting them access to opportunities previously beyond their reach. Thus, I have great confidence that it will offer me the skills and platform to do the same. Ultimately, I view SheCodes as an avenue to shape my own future and positively impact the trajectories of those around me in ways previously unforeseen. As a first generation graduate many of the opportunities present for myself and those around me have been shaped by circumstance instead of possibilities and I want to break that cycle and create a new trajectory.

🤹‍♀️ Lisa's Hobbies

While I enjoy hobbies that involve exploration and creativity, I particularly gravitate towards engaging in more creative activities for leisure. I find pleasure in crafting various items and utilise a range of mediums, including sewing, knitting, watercolor painting, photography, digital art, website development, and writing poetry. Additionally, I find the explorative aspect of my hobbies fulfilled through reading books and articles. Currently, I'm immersed in Christopher Boll's "The Shadow of the Object: Psychoanalysis of the Unthought Known."

SheCodes Foundation Mission

Women currently hold 25% of coding jobs and earn 30% less money than men. In most developing countries, more than 65% of women don't have bank accounts and cannot afford to invest in their education. Female refugees also don’t have many opportunities to invest in their education and improve their career horizon - they often work in unskilled, undervalued, and low-paid informal sectors.

SheCodes is here to help provide women in developing countries and women who are refugees with the opportunity to learn how to code for free. SheCodes offers a solid introduction to product development, product design and product management.
