Mathapelo's Story I've always heard of the tech industry as being perceived as one the most challenging spaces to not only work in but to learn as well, and because i love and thrive in spaces that challenge me to think critically and exercise my problem solving skills, that attracted me and triggered my interest for tech. Upon making my research, i also discovered the fact that there is a high shortage of females in the industry and that further escalated my interest. Since i also advocate for positive change and gender justice, venturing into tech would not only be me pursuing something what i love but also actively and practically choosing to be part of the change i want to see. Seeing other young females share their journeys as they venture into tech through coding also played a huge role in motivating and encouraging me to follow this path and coding to me seemed to be the perfect way to kickstart my journey as i got to get a glimpse of what it is through their experiences.

🙋‍♀️ Mathapelo's Motivation

I am naturally an advocate for positive change and gender justice and so, seeing that SheCodes has a program specifically designed for females is what made it stand out as it also aligns with my personal values and interests and the fact that it is free was definitely the cherry on top as it creates platform even for those that are not in a financially enabling state to still be able to access opportunities such as this, that they would've otherwise not been able to access. For me, there is no better way that is perfect to bring about women empowerment than equipping them with skills that will allow them to not only have their dreams realized, but to also usher them into financial independence while at the same time correcting the imbalances of gender in the workspace especially in the world of tech where it is usually overpopulated by males.

🎯

SheCodes Foundation Mission

Women currently hold 25% of coding jobs and earn 30% less money than men. In most developing countries, more than 65% of women don't have bank accounts and cannot afford to invest in their education. Female refugees also don’t have many opportunities to invest in their education and improve their career horizon - they often work in unskilled, undervalued, and low-paid informal sectors.

SheCodes is here to help provide women in developing countries and women who are refugees with the opportunity to learn how to code for free. SheCodes offers a solid introduction to product development, product design and product management.
