Melela's Story Through YouTube videos and the kind of career content I exposed myself to at the age of 19. Ordinary people creating vlogs of a 'day in the life of someone in tech' or corporate. What I took away from those videos is how certified short courses and building a portfolio of some sort paved a successful path for their new career.

🙋‍♀️ Melela's Motivation

I am a 22 year old final year student at the University of Johannesburg studying strategic communications. I strongly feel learning a skill in coding will aid me when negotiating for a good starting salary once I enter the work place as I have always wanted to pursue a career in technology and creating tech products. My eagerness to expand my skillset and leverage emerging technologies stems from wanting a better life for both my mother and I.

🤹‍♀️ Melela's Hobbies

Creating music playlists for friends and family, reading, going to live music events and playing netball.

SheCodes Foundation Mission

Women currently hold 25% of coding jobs and earn 30% less money than men. In most developing countries, more than 65% of women don't have bank accounts and cannot afford to invest in their education. Female refugees also don’t have many opportunities to invest in their education and improve their career horizon - they often work in unskilled, undervalued, and low-paid informal sectors.

SheCodes is here to help provide women in developing countries and women who are refugees with the opportunity to learn how to code for free. SheCodes offers a solid introduction to product development, product design and product management.
