Mercy's Story I only took it as a unit in my undergraduate electrical engineering class but at that time did not understand how to work with code and how to manipulate it. We were only exposed to writing code on paper but never had the chance to practice and see how the code works on a real application. I have now seen the possibilities that coding has and beginning to have an unending interest in it.

🙋‍♀️ Mercy's Motivation

For the longest time I have always thought that coding and programming is very difficult because I did not put enough effort to focus on learning the languages. Every time I said I am a techie, everyone would think I know how to code. While I in the past have not seen the essence of coding, I am now starting to realize the importance of the skill and how relevant it is in the current job environment. I also recently launched a community technology center in my village where I teach people digital skills and have online mentors for those who would like to learn code. I have challenged myself to take the opportunity and learn in order to bring more impact to the people I hope to serve as well as give myself a chance to have flexibility with my career options. At this point, I now believe that coding is the future.

🤹‍♀️ Mercy's Hobbies

I like to travel, write blogs and take photos. Over the Covid 19 pandemic lockdown, I started a webcast/podcast where I discuss how technologies are making an impact in different communities and how women can be a part of the change. I also like to host webinars and workshops with different volunteers in my organization from around the world to speak about different emerging technologies.

SheCodes Foundation Mission

Women currently hold 25% of coding jobs and earn 30% less money than men. In most developing countries, more than 65% of women don't have bank accounts and cannot afford to invest in their education. Female refugees also don’t have many opportunities to invest in their education and improve their career horizon - they often work in unskilled, undervalued, and low-paid informal sectors.

SheCodes is here to help provide women in developing countries and women who are refugees with the opportunity to learn how to code for free. SheCodes offers a solid introduction to product development, product design and product management.
