Monawara 's Story As an Afghan girl raised with limited access to technology, I never expected to become fascinated by coding. However, my perspective shifted during my teenage years after a chance opportunity to use a computer for the first time. Seeing the potential to build digital creations through writing code immediately captivated my curiosity. With restricted internet access, I spent countless hours at local libraries, pouring over any coding books and resources I could find. Through sheer determination and self-teaching, I learned the basics of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Building simple websites allowed me to apply these skills hands-on, solidifying my passion for coding's blend of logic and creativity. While pursuing an education in other subjects, coding remained my true calling that I steadfastly nurtured through online tutorials and personal projects. Overcoming immense cultural and technical obstacles, this interest has blossomed into a driving force. I now possess an unshakable desire to transform my self-taught coding skills into comprehensive, professionally-guided expertise. Despite the challenges I have faced as an Afghan woman exploring coding, this field opens doorways to uplift my aspirations and create new opportunities.

SheCodes Foundation Mission

Women currently hold 25% of coding jobs and earn 30% less money than men. In most developing countries, more than 65% of women don't have bank accounts and cannot afford to invest in their education. Female refugees also don’t have many opportunities to invest in their education and improve their career horizon - they often work in unskilled, undervalued, and low-paid informal sectors.

SheCodes is here to help provide women in developing countries and women who are refugees with the opportunity to learn how to code for free. SheCodes offers a solid introduction to product development, product design and product management.
