Setara 's Story I first became interested in coding during my first year in college. I had a friend who was studying computer science at our college while I was studying building construction and management. I remember one day when we were sitting outside and talking, he pulled her computer out and said let me show you something interesting. He showed us the game he has developed which was amazing and I said to myself I want to learn it too. Three years later, I went to American University of Afghanistan and started studying IT as I still had that memory stuck in my head. As I grew up, I realized how powerful IT is and how women are expected not to enter this field which was sad but made me choose IT.

🙋‍♀️ Setara 's Motivation

Growing up, I never heard of women in Tech which is typical of living in a patriarchal society. During high school, the situation almost stayed the same. I did not have a computer or personal phone and my knowledge about technology was little and I did not have access to the internet. Majority of the girls my age hated mathematics, physics, chemistry and we never found the opportunity to grow an interest in these subjects. I grew a passion for coding and IT when I started studying at American University of Afghanistan. It was surprising and inspiring to see so many girls choosing IT as their majors. IT is the future and as girls in afghanistan are deprived of their basic rights, I believe IT is the way out. It is a good way to empower girls in Afghanistan for a big change. SheCodes is an amazing opportunity for me to explore coding and to be part of the next generation of women in STEM. I love working with girls who are passionate about IT and coding and who do not want to be left behind as the world is changing rapidly and AI is everywhere and SheCodes is the right place.

🤹‍♀️ Setara 's Hobbies

Some of my favorite hobbies are doing workouts, listening to podcasts, watching videos about data science, and watching documentaries. I enjoy listening to podcasts, especially to women who are leaders in their communities, in IT, in prestigious companies and universities. I always try to learn what they have done differently that made them leave a powerful impact not just in their community but in the world.

SheCodes Foundation Mission

Women currently hold 25% of coding jobs and earn 30% less money than men. In most developing countries, more than 65% of women don't have bank accounts and cannot afford to invest in their education. Female refugees also don’t have many opportunities to invest in their education and improve their career horizon - they often work in unskilled, undervalued, and low-paid informal sectors.

SheCodes is here to help provide women in developing countries and women who are refugees with the opportunity to learn how to code for free. SheCodes offers a solid introduction to product development, product design and product management.
