Wynonna's Story I actually started coding at the suggestion of my students. Several of my students would share with me their coding experiences and journeys. While they talked a lot about the challenges, they would also talk about how rewarding it felt when they overcame those challenges. They would show me the websites and projects they were working on and those were really inspiring for me to see. Then, when I commented that it looked difficult and that I could never do it, my students actually encouraged me and suggested I give it a try -- and I’m glad I did! Although coding is a tough and rocky path, I’ve been thoroughly enjoying the ride since I can see the progress I’m making bit-by-bit. That only motivates me to learn more and do better!

🙋‍♀️ Wynonna's Motivation

There are several reasons! For one, I want to gain new skills and coding is something that I’ve been interested in for a while, but I have always been too intimidated to try out. I like how SheCodes provides guidance for us beginners and creates an encouraging and supportive community. In addition, I also hope that after learning to code I will be able to give back to my own community and be a resource for others, especially young girls. In this way, I appreciate SheCodes’ mission in focusing on making coding more accessible to women all around the world. As a teacher, I see first-hand how popular coding and technology-related topics are with my students, a demand that will only continue to grow in the future. So in a way, I also want to learn coding to not only be a resource to my students, but also to help myself to be able to keep up with a rapidly changing world.

🤹‍♀️ Wynonna's Hobbies

I enjoy running and cycling. It’s my goal to be able to join and run a marathon by the end of the year! I also really enjoy learning languages. In my free-time I’ve signed up for French and Japanese classes. In addition, I enjoy writing and sending postcards! I send these to my friends and family to share a little bit of how things are going on my side of the world. I’ve even joined the Postcrossing community to be able to send more postcards. And of course, it’s always a nice surprise to get some letters in the mail too!

🎯

SheCodes Foundation Mission

Women currently hold 25% of coding jobs and earn 30% less money than men. In most developing countries, more than 65% of women don't have bank accounts and cannot afford to invest in their education. Female refugees also don’t have many opportunities to invest in their education and improve their career horizon - they often work in unskilled, undervalued, and low-paid informal sectors.

SheCodes is here to help provide women in developing countries and women who are refugees with the opportunity to learn how to code for free. SheCodes offers a solid introduction to product development, product design and product management.
