Mariia's Story Back in school, I extremely enjoyed writing basic programs in Pascal and Python, often staying after classes to finish the tasks or do additional ones. Then, when I enrolled in Medical Physics at my first university, we had a more profound Python course, which fascinated me. It was a course for physicists but even then I couldn't stop thinking that such codes could be used to process languages. That was when I found out about computer linguistics, which I am currently studying. However, since then and along the way my passion expanded. I've tried some basic C++ and learned about QA/QC. However, as an extremely practical person, I really value knowing what is behind the pictures and web pages. So, I do not mean to stop and want to soak up as much coding knowledge as I can.

🙋‍♀️ Mariia's Motivation

I am currently still a student of Computer Linguistics at Kyiv National University. This program allows me to combine my love for languages with my curiosity and passion for programming. However, due to COVID and, now, war, I feel that I am missing out on a lot. And programming course is of key importance for me. I am attempting to make up for that knowledge with self-study but I believe that having a well-curated course could be much more beneficial. I was searching for one for a while until my teacher advised me SheCodes. And I believe it is just what I need to immerse myself into coding.

🤹‍♀️ Mariia's Hobbies

I enjoy helping others and working in teams of motivated people. That is how I got into volunteering. Since 2014, I have volunteered for over 2000 hours in total in museums, speaking clubs, events, and even music festivals. The latter has also allowed me to combine my two passions - one for volunteering and another for music. In my free time, I try to learn to play the guitar which I brought to my dorm from Kharkiv just before the war. I also have a passion for languages. I worked as an English teacher for a while, but I also speak Spanish and Polish. Now, I am also learning German.

The SheCodes Foundation Mission

Women hold only 25% of coding jobs and earn 30% less than men. In many developing countries, over 65% of women lack bank accounts, making it difficult to invest in their education.

The SheCodes Foundation is changing that. We provide women in developing countries with free coding education, equipping them with the skills to build a better future. In partnership with SheCodes, we offer training in product development, design, and management, empowering women to thrive in the tech industry.
