Tra's Story Remembering when I was in high school, I wrote my first line of code “Hello world, Tra” with HTML, I was so amazed. For a while, I was pursuing my Business Administration degree and the closest thing to coding I did was Excel programming, the waiting time for Excel solver to work out the problem was an amazement, too. However, the idea of coding as a serious career choice never crossed my mind until July 2021, when I was looking for a paid internship in Logistic & Supply Chain Management – my major. There were none for my search, but plenty calls for JavaScript interns. Indeed, almost 90% of college graduates in Vietnam do not find a full-time job immediately, in the meantime, Vietnam Tech firms are experiencing severe labor shortage. Reflecting upon myself, I have communication skills and business mindset – as my major is Business. More to the knowledge, many coding jobs do not specify an IT degree if I can show good projects. Learning to code is hard, but not impossible, especially when I am interested in it. All in all, I find coding enchanting and career path for a front-end coder is very clear. These two become my motivations to learn to code.

🙋‍♀️ Tra's Motivation

I want to learn to code with SheCodes for two reasons: Firstly, SheCodes is not just an ordinary online learning website but also a special community that supports women. I believe in the philosophy of SheCodes’ founders on gender equality, wanting to get more women working in the male-dominated coding industry. Personally, women - when apply for a coding job - are bounded by prejudices. In Vietnam, there are few girls attending coding classes, if there are any women in a coding team, she is considered “swag”. However, I believe that coding - a job requiring minimal mobility and muscle strength - is a good fit for women. Indeed, more women working in this industry will normalize our presences. Not to mention, coding is a high-paid job in where I live. Secondly, SheCodes workshops are wholesome and different online learning experience, therefore, I believe in my completion of the program. Program structure is designed by experts in this industry, it covers all topics in a front-end programmer’ tasks without going overboard. This acuteness with self-paced schedule is a winning point to me.

🤹‍♀️ Tra's Hobbies

I love dogs and skincare. For dogs, We have a Belgian Malinois, Jack, unlike other Malinois, he is so clumsy. I once saw him sunbathing with his paws covering his eyes, I do not know how he ended up in that position, but it was so cute. His owner – me – is saving up to have him neutered. It is said that 3-4 years of age is a right time for a male dog to be neutered. Once done, he can stay with us for 2 years longer than usual. For skincare, I was battling with acne for 7 years, ever since I got into my puberty. My parents bought me to 3 different dermatologists, but nothing worked. Later, I did some researches on my own, with some trials and errors, fixed my diet, started working out and built my own skincare routine, my acne went away. Long story short, two years ago, I went to a workshop in my school about “Turning your hobby into a career”. I was inspired to open my online business where I sell skincare products. I know the real struggle of having acne during teenage years - when girls start to aware of their looks. After all, I am trying my best to share with my clients – my friends what I know about lifestyle, and I also customize a skincare regime for acne-free skin. I learnt to build my own algorithms to manage my customers by Excel, I have two files, one for new customers and one to follow-up. These tasks consume a lot of time, and I do not make much money, but I am so happy with myself these days since I can help people.
