eden's Story I first became interested in coding during my undergraduate studies in Biomedical Engineering at Jimma University. While learning about medical equipment and diagnostics, I realized that software plays a crucial role in how modern healthcare technologies function. This interest deepened when I took courses in physiological modeling and biomedical signal processing, where we used tools like MATLAB to analyze and interpret biological data. Later, during my MSc in Biomedical Imaging, I explored Python programming more seriously while working on my thesis, which focused on detecting Leishmaniasis parasites using deep learning. This project was a turning point. It showed me the power of coding in solving real-world medical challenges. The ability to teach a computer to recognize disease patterns from images fascinated me and inspired me to pursue further skills in artificial intelligence and image analysis. As a lecturer and researcher, I’ve since used coding in teaching and guiding students through biomedical product design and research projects. However, I’m eager to enhance these skills to build more functional and user-friendly digital health solutions. My journey started with academic curiosity, but it has grown into a purposeful pursuit to make a meaningful impact through technology.

🙋‍♀️ eden's Motivation

As a Biomedical Engineer and researcher specializing in biomedical imaging and artificial intelligence, I am passionate about leveraging technology to improve healthcare outcomes. My academic and research experience including a master’s thesis on detecting Leishmaniasis using deep learning has deepened my interest in coding, especially in Python and MATLAB. However, I recognize the need to strengthen my practical coding skills to transition from theoretical research to building real-world, user-centered digital health solutions. My motivation to join SheCodes stems from its structured, hands-on approach that empowers women in tech. I believe it will provide me with the practical skills and community support necessary to grow as a developer. I aim to develop intuitive medical applications that can function in low-resource settings, addressing public health challenges in Ethiopia and similar contexts. Additionally, as a lecturer and chair of the Biomedical Imaging stream at Jimma University, I want to inspire and mentor more women to pursue technology and coding. Learning with SheCodes will help me become a more effective educator and role model, integrating programming into my teaching and research supervision. I am excited about the opportunity to sharpen my coding abilities, collaborate globally, and make a lasting impact through innovative health technologies.

🤹‍♀️ eden's Hobbies

In my free time, I enjoy playing traditional Ethiopian musical instruments, which helps me stay connected to my culture and provides a creative and relaxing outlet. I’m also passionate about staying up to date with the latest headlines in technology, particularly in biomedical innovations and artificial intelligence, as they inspire my academic and research work. Additionally, I actively participate in volunteer activities, including community service programs and leadership training events, where I help organize charity initiatives and mentor others. These hobbies reflect my love for culture, technology, and social impact, and they keep me balanced and motivated both personally and professionally.

The SheCodes Foundation Mission

Women hold only 25% of coding jobs and earn 30% less than men. In many developing countries, over 65% of women lack bank accounts, making it difficult to invest in their education.

The SheCodes Foundation is changing that. We provide women in developing countries with free coding education, equipping them with the skills to build a better future. In partnership with SheCodes, we offer training in product development, design, and management, empowering women to thrive in the tech industry.
