Jivanka's Story My interest in coding grew as I became more involved in research that required analyzing large datasets and interpreting complex statistical results. While working on studies related to infectious diseases, inflammation, and metabolic syndromes in HIV, I realized the limitations of relying solely on traditional statistical software. I saw how coding could streamline data processing, improve accuracy, and allow for more advanced analyses. My growing interest in biostatistics further reinforced the need to develop programming skills, particularly in handling large-scale health data efficiently. As I explored the increasing role of artificial intelligence and machine learning in medical research, I recognized that coding is not just a technical skill but a powerful tool for driving innovation in public health.

🙋‍♀️ Jivanka's Motivation

Motivation for Learning Coding in Medical Science In today’s rapidly evolving research landscape, coding has become an essential skill for medical scientists. As a student focused on infectious diseases, inflammation, and metabolic syndromes in HIV, I recognize the critical role of data-driven insights in improving public health outcomes. Learning to code will enhance my ability to analyze large datasets, automate data processing, and conduct advanced statistical analyses, ultimately strengthening the quality and impact of my research. With my growing interest in biostatistics, coding will enable me to apply sophisticated analytical techniques, visualize complex data trends, and develop predictive models that can inform clinical and policy decisions. Additionally, computational skills will allow me to engage with emerging technologies like artificial intelligence and machine learning, which are transforming medical research by identifying patterns and associations that may not be immediately apparent through traditional methods. By acquiring coding expertise, I aim to bridge the gap between data science and medical research, ensuring that my work remains at the forefront of innovation. This knowledge will not only streamline my research processes but also contribute to meaningful scientific advancements, particularly in understanding disease mechanisms and improving healthcare strategies for vulnerable populations. Ultimately, coding will empower me to conduct more efficient, precise, and impactful research.

🤹‍♀️ Jivanka's Hobbies

Reading has always been a source of both knowledge and escape for me. Whether it’s scientific research, historical narratives, or fiction, I love how books expand my perspective and challenge my thinking. Art, in any form, has a similar effect—I enjoy painting and colouring although I am not very good at it, but I also find inspiration in simply observing how others express emotions and ideas through their work. Traveling is another passion of mine; exploring new places, meeting people from different cultures, and experiencing unfamiliar landscapes always leaves me feeling inspired and more connected to the world. Each of these hobbies, in their own way, fuels my curiosity and creativity, shaping how I see and engage with the world around me.

The SheCodes Foundation Mission

Women hold only 25% of coding jobs and earn 30% less than men. In many developing countries, over 65% of women lack bank accounts, making it difficult to invest in their education.

The SheCodes Foundation is changing that. We provide women in developing countries with free coding education, equipping them with the skills to build a better future. In partnership with SheCodes, we offer training in product development, design, and management, empowering women to thrive in the tech industry.
