Kateryna's Story I became interested when I was in university. I bought a book about Python and I created a code that did the famous "Hello world!" I coded for a few months and dropped because I thought I didn't have the talent for it or any natural talent for science or math. This year I learned that I actually have more curiosity about the world than I used to when I was a teen, and I'm able to enjoy that part of myself more than ever before.

🙋‍♀️ Kateryna's Motivation

I don't have a high opinion of Putin for declaring a war on Ukraine, but I do have to say I am grateful to him for a chance to give my life a new fresh start. Putin made me leave my home and my comfort zone. I'm in a different country right now, Germany. I have a new place to live and I'm learning more about myself as a person. I want to use my running away as a new chance to believe in myself again and return to coding, and contributing to science in a way that only I can.

🤹‍♀️ Kateryna's Hobbies

I like learning languages and reading. I also like fashion. Also, my new friend inspired me to read about biology this year. She's an amazing woman, who works in a pharmacy, and loves poetry and Sci-fi. She's 15 years older than me, and she thinks she's too old to contribute to science because she failed to do so when she was my age. I want to prove her wrong by showing that if I, in my 24 years with no B.Sc and M.Sc, can do it, then 40 is not late for her to start and re-start a science career either. Anyway, my friend inspired me to get a book called "Nature's Palette. A colour reference system for the natural world" by Patrick Baty. It's hilarious because it describes how scientists back in the day didn't have a CSS Colors name system (like #F0F8FF for AliceBlue, I hope I got the term right) and instead used words like "canary yellow." They were suffering without the code to define what color they were discussing. Check it out; the book is fun!

The SheCodes Foundation Mission

Women hold only 25% of coding jobs and earn 30% less than men. In many developing countries, over 65% of women lack bank accounts, making it difficult to invest in their education.

The SheCodes Foundation is changing that. We provide women in developing countries with free coding education, equipping them with the skills to build a better future. In partnership with SheCodes, we offer training in product development, design, and management, empowering women to thrive in the tech industry.
