Kgomotso's Story I have experience developing content for websites and have worked for NGOs and artistic projects. Whilst I have used platforms like WordPress and Wix which have adaptable templates, I believe I can create more user – friendly, multi – lingual interfaces if I have the requisite coding skills. I have also attended an academic conference on Women in Science and learnt through hands – on interaction that ‘programmers can create whatever they want with just the line of codes.’ I have also contributed to Wikipedia and trained people on making Wikipedia entries. I have done this in English and local South African languages. Through this interface, I have seen the basic components of coding and this has piqued my interest.

🙋‍♀️ Kgomotso's Motivation

Learning how to code with SheCodes will empower me as a budding researcher, writer and in advancing my community. I am interested in the intersection of the humanities and social sciences with the arts. I believe that technology powers the world and knowledge in different disciplines can be documented, disseminated and archived through optimal use of digital interfaces. Knowledge production happens on the web and is transferred on phones, computers and other digital devices. Coding skills will help me to contribute to knowledge production, especially in my research interests. There is great automation and computation in educational and other contexts and having coding skills will help me to navigate a changing landscape. I am also interested in the diversity of career paths which coding can open. Coding will equip me in my job hunting quest and possibly lead to me even creating employment for others. I believe in the adage that ‘With coding, you can work anywhere.’ I would like to contribute to bridging the gender divide and will transfer my skills to other women as well as children of all genders and socio – economic circumstances in future.

🤹‍♀️ Kgomotso's Hobbies

I enjoy reading, writing, visiting art galleries and museums as well as live music and theatre performances. I also enjoy creating beadwork and crafting. I also enjoy watching movies and visiting game arcades with friends and family. I am a very family-oriented person and enjoy cooking for and entertaining friends and family when the circumstances allow.

The SheCodes Foundation Mission

Women hold only 25% of coding jobs and earn 30% less than men. In many developing countries, over 65% of women lack bank accounts, making it difficult to invest in their education.

The SheCodes Foundation is changing that. We provide women in developing countries with free coding education, equipping them with the skills to build a better future. In partnership with SheCodes, we offer training in product development, design, and management, empowering women to thrive in the tech industry.
