Phạm Thị Phương's Story I have always been interested in Science and Mathematics. In Viet Nam, the education system divides students into different groups based on their interests. If someone likes Math, Physics, or Chemistry, they would probably end up in the same class. I distinctly remember the feeling of being the only girl in the room full of boys. That feeling gives me the confidence to be different. It helps me overcome any self-doubt when I do anything stereotypically male jobs. That confidence and self-belief encouraged me to make my first contact with computers when I was 12. Cracking offline games for free usage was quite popular back then because kids in my country did not have the money to buy them. Even though I just followed video instructions from others, successfully crack games makes me feel like a genius hacker in an action movie. It filled me with a great deal of excitement. In those days, I did not even know I was coding. I was using HTML tags inside a game forum to embed images, links, and videos for fun. That pure enjoyment followed me throughout my childhood and spurred me to pursue a career in coding and software development

🙋‍♀️ Phạm Thị Phương's Motivation

I want to be financially independent and to be able to support my future family. Those are some of the reasons why I choose to pursue a career in STEM, particularly coding and software development. But two problems are preventing me from doing so. Firstly, I originated from a small town in North Viet Nam where people are not very LGBT-friendly. My family refused to financially support me when I came out as homosexual four years ago. It is very challenging for a young adult like me to make ends meet and pursue higher education. Secondly, gender stereotypes in my country are stubborn problems. Women are expected to give up their profession to support their spouse's careers and the family making women’s opportunities for full-time employment more limited than men’s. The gender pay gap also makes it very difficult for young women to be financially independent. Due to gender stereotypes, the STEM learning environment in my country is not female-friendly. Courses are either too expensive or having a bias with females learning how to code. Therefore, I was thrilled to find out that Shecodes not only creates an encouraging environment but also provides financial support for young women like me to pCursue our dreams.

🤹‍♀️ Phạm Thị Phương's Hobbies

I love doing d.i.y projects. Wood and leather are my go-to materials. I love the idea of making and building things from the ground. As the child delights in her mud pie, so the adult enjoys building things in their own design. It makes me feel in control of my own environment. That is also the reason why I love decorating my home and repairing furniture. The feeling of being able to change the surroundings physically gives me the confidence to change the world
